“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination.” — Leatrice Eiseman, PANTONE Color Institute
The Zeitgeist descends on downtown New Canaan this season with “18-3838.” Specifically, this group exhibition features works by Charles Arnoldi, John Clement, Leah Durner, Matthew Heller, Madeleine Keesing, Martin Kline, and Jill Moser.
These artists have long graced Heather Gaudio Fine Art’s roster with their personal styles and individual processes. Now, for the first time, the gallery brings them together. The result is a visually rich installation that is as dynamic as it is au courant.

The Power of Pantone Ultra Violet
Last December, PANTONE declared 18-3838 Pantone Ultra Violet as the official color of 2018. Known for its depth, this blue-based purple pigment evokes spiritual and meditative reflection. Furthermore, it elicits cosmic and futuristic outlooks.
Culturally, society associates it with individuality and acts of rebelliousness. Never stagnant, Pantone Ultra Violet is original and enigmatic. Naturally, it draws the creative mind. Therefore, it is no accident that the artists in this show have gravitated to this color over the course of their careers.
Interestingly, works in this exhibition date from the last two decades. In fact, the artists completed the most recent pieces before 18-3838 became the official color of 2018.
A Convergence of Styles
The artists in this exhibition have achieved a defined style through a skilled understanding of their materials. Whether as painters using encaustic and enamel or as printmakers and sculptors, they share an exploration of abstraction.
Starting with contemplation, these artists meditate on their processes. Then, they allow chance to play an integral part in the overall compositional structure. While one outlier in the group may not fully conform to this description, his work still finds a thematic entry point to the show. Ultimately, these artists invoke a confluence of the current spirit, unified by the thought-provoking Pantone Ultra Violet shade.
