In case you missed it, a new initiative is underway to honor a New York icon. Recently, Congressman Jerrold Nadler and Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney introduced H. Res. 311.

This resolution supports the issuance of a commemorative Metropolitan Museum of Art stamp. Specifically, the stamp would mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of the museum in Manhattan. Currently, twenty-one Members of the House joined Representatives Nadler and Maloney as cosponsors.

A Center of Culture and Education

Congressman Jerrold Nadler highlighted the importance of the institution. He stated: “For nearly 150 years, the Met has stood at the center of culture, art, and art education… This institution has worked endlessly to collect, preserve, and present art and culture from around the world.”

He added that he is proud to reintroduce this bill. The goal is encouraging the Citizen’s Stamp Advisory Committee to issue the stamp.

Similarly, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney praised the museum. She noted: “Our city’s vibrant art culture and its outstanding artists are exemplified and inspired by the Met… A commemorative stamp is a wonderful way to honor these contributions.”

Support from The Met Leadership

Daniel Weiss, President and CEO of The Met, expressed his gratitude. He stated: “The Met is grateful to Senators Schumer and Gillibrand and Representatives Nadler and Maloney for their enthusiastic support.”

As the museum prepares to celebrate its anniversary in 2020, Weiss sees this as a perfect tribute. He believes there is no better way to recognize the museum’s contribution to the cultural life of the nation than a Metropolitan Museum of Art stamp.

Weiss added: “Over the nearly 150 years of our history, the Museum has welcomed tens of millions of visitors… and our education programs have been emulated throughout the country.”

A Landmark Anniversary

Located in Rep. Nadler’s district, the Met will celebrate the landmark anniversary in 2020. ** originally**, it was founded to bring art and art education to the American people.

Throughout its history, the museum has built a collection of over four million items. Furthermore, it welcomes over seven million visitors every year. Dedicated to conservation, the museum ensures its treasures remain accessible to generations.

Additionally, the Met engages over 2,000 educators each year. Ultimately, a commemorative stamp would fittingly celebrate this legacy of integration, education, and art.
