From the first time a caveman painted a hunter, people have worshiped the human form. Whether it is the Venus of Willendorf or contemporary art, we like looking at each other. Currently, the Lighthouse ArtCenter Museum in Tequesta, Florida, glorifies this subject.
The exhibition, titled Go Figure: A Celebration of the Human Form, highlights the diversity of the human shape. Participating artists interpret the mass, geometry, and perspective of anatomy through multiple media.
Award-Winning Highlights
The judges selected a sketch titled Woman with Red Hair as the key image for the show. Created by Lauris Aguera-Areas, the piece features masterful line quality and red accents. Additionally, this artist won first place for a dramatic lino cut titled The Bath.
At the awards reception, exhibition judge Dr. Nazaré Feliciano praised the quality of the show. She stated: “To judge artworks is a demanding challenge, especially when one is in the presence of truly exceptional work.”
Another standout was the black and white photograph by Durga Garcia. Titled Male Torso Study, it won the “Executive Director’s Choice Award.” Masterful lighting highlights the bodybuilder’s muscular curves.
Executive Director Katie Deits noted: “It is more than the shapely muscles that catch the viewer’s eye… the commanding lighting is skillfully placed showing every ripple.”

Painting and Sculpture
Beyond photography, the Lighthouse ArtCenter Museum showcased diverse mediums. For example, Kris Davis’ painting Breathless highlights a woman’s body embraced by sheer fabric.
In the realm of sculpture, Mehri Danielpour presented Escape. This bronze piece depicts a man and woman fleeing in fear. Although it memorializes the 1928 Florida hurricane, it represents escape from any disaster.
Finally, Judy Flescher displayed her adroit use of collage in Diapositive. French maps and newspapers enhance the background, creating a reflective tone.
Ultimately, Go Figure is an opportunity to recognize the beauty in diversity. Because we are not all the same, the world is truly more beautiful.
