On April 3, a new art museum opens its doors in South Beach. Called the George Daniell Museum, it features the full collection of prominent American photographer and artist George Daniell.

Renowned for his work with Time, Life, and Esquire, Daniell captured images of legendary celebrities. His subjects included Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, and Georgia O’Keeffe. Simultaneously, he documented the post-war hardship of everyday life in Europe. Significantly, this is the first time the public can view his entire collection.

According to Director Helmut Schuster: “The new George Daniell Museum will be an important addition to the art world, to see both the glamour and grit of yesteryear.”

Part of a New Multi-Museum Complex

The museum is housed in the new Wilzig Museum Building. Located in South Beach, this venue currently houses the World Erotic Art Museum (WEAM). Additionally, the building features permanent exhibitions on Magnus Hirschfeld and Alfred Kinsey.

Furthermore, the opening of the George Daniell Museum marks the first step in a larger development. Specifically, the team is in final discussions to host two more international museums by 2020.

George Daniell: The Artist and His Legacy

Born in Yonkers in 1911, George Daniell began his journey photographing the Hudson River. Later, his desire to see the world grew. Over a 60-year career, he traveled the globe twice, capturing beauty before it faded.

Leading fashion photographer Bruce Weber praised Daniell’s work in The New York Times. He stated: “I have always loved Daniell’s photographs. They have a spark and a sense of humor that is very human.”

Moreover, Daniell formed friendships with icons like Georgia O’Keeffe. She once said: “Besides Stieglitz, of course, George Daniell is one of my favorite photographers.”

A Democratic Vision

Art critic Carl Little ascribes a “democratic vision” to Daniell. He points out the strength of Daniell’s images of humanity, such as herring fishermen in Canada during the Great Depression. Despite difficult circumstances, Daniell conveyed their dignity and hope.

However, he is equally recognized for his celebrity portraits. He photographed Tennessee Williams, Robert De Niro (age 10), and Sophia Loren. Of Loren, he said: “For unspoiled, blooming beauty, I have never seen an equal.”

Grand Opening Event

The grand opening celebration takes place on Wednesday, April 3rd, starting at 6 pm. Open to the public, the event features music, food, and access to the galleries. Best of all, it is free to attend.

In addition, a pop-up shop will offer limited edition prints and books. Visitors can find the George Daniell Museum at 1205 Washington Avenue in Miami Beach, Florida.
