SUMMARY:Subtropic Film Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:Art of the Times is pleased to share information about Subtropic Film Festival 2026 with our readers. \nEvent information supplied via the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County. \nAbout this event\nFrom Nov. 6 to 8 we’re taking over West Palm Beach and Lake Worth Beach. It’s our fourth year at the Norton Museum of Art and we’re back at Afflux Studios at G-Star. For the first time\, we’re also spilling into Lake Worth Beach\, with screenings at the Lake Worth Playhouse and events around town. The program packs in SIX features\, more than a dozen shorts blocks\, a two-part Kodak film camera workshop\, an industry panel\, a street photo walk\, live performance\, and multi-venue parties we’re already excited about. \nFriday night we open at the Norton with Homegrown\, five films that dig into the Florida most people drive straight past: sacred ground\, buried history\, the water under our feet\, and whatever’s living just below the surface. \nSaturday runs all day and well into the night. The camera workshop kicks off at Afflux at 11:30 a.m.\, and shorts take over the screens there all afternoon. At 2 p.m. the Norton screens Frogtown\, which took Best Florida Feature and the Audience Award at the Florida Film Festival. Then we head to Lake Worth Beach for a photo walk and a filmmaker happy hour. After that come two features at the Lake Worth Playhouse: Patrick Bresnan’s First They Came For My College and William Means’ Junkie. The Junkie After Party hits Propaganda at 9:30 p.m.\, and nobody involved is planning to leave early. \nOn Sunday\, Afflux runs from 11:30 a.m. straight through to the Awards Ceremony and live editing session at 6:45 p.m. The day has seven shorts blocks and Kevin Contento’s The Moths and the Flame\, just off its Berlinale Forum premiere. It also has Tropical Park\, a Miami feature shot in one 85-minute take from the backseat of a car. At 2 p.m. the Norton screens Honeyjoon\, a mother-daughter story about grief and arguing your way back to each other\, with the galleries open to you afterward. \nGrab one film or grab the whole weekend. \nAdmission information\nTickets to opening night at the Norton Museum\, and to Saturday night at the Lake Worth Play House will be ticketed separately from festival passes. \nTickets are available for individual screenings \n$10-18 for individual screenings \n$20 day pass \n$30 weekend \nPlan your visit\nCity: West Palm BeachCounty: Palm Beach CountyVenue: Norton Museum of Art1450 S. SUMMARY:Exhibition | Interstitial
DESCRIPTION:Art of the Times is pleased to share information about Exhibition | Interstitial with our readers. \nEvent information supplied via the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County. \nAbout this event\nINTERSTITIAL showcases six second-year MFA candidates from Florida Atlantic University working across printmaking\, book arts\, photography\, painting\, performance\, and sculpture. FAU’s MFA program emphasizes this interdisciplinary development–conceptual\, aesthetic\, technical\, and professional- with this exhibition presenting work made during their first year (out of three) in the program. \n“Interstitial” refers to the small\, narrow gaps between things: cracks\, intervals of time; it is the interstices that occur between objects or time periods. Curator\, Sarah E. Huang\, borrowed this term because it names where the students find themselves at their midpoint within the program. And although they are almost halfway through\, exhibiting together now allows viewers to trace the threads of the artists’ distinct\, idiosyncratic practices\, which will (and have) only become clearer through our individual studio and parallel practices. \nAs Huang looked more closely at the works her colleagues produced over the last year\, she found that they share a similar preoccupation with “betweenness.” Meaning\, each artist represented is working to reconcile some sort of dichotomy: material and immaterial\, process and object\, inner life and outer life. INTERSTITIAL is ultimately a record of these reconciliations\, albeit in process. \nAdmission information\nFree Admission \nPlan your visit\nCity: Delray BeachCounty: Palm Beach CountyVenue: Arts Warehouse313 NE 3rd Street\, Delray Beach FL 33444 \nView original event details \nMore arts and culture nearby\nExplore more Delray Beach events or browse the Palm Beach County arts and culture calendar with Art of the Times. \nSource: Cultural Council for Palm Beach County. SUMMARY:"Tobi Kahn: Quest for the Essence"
DESCRIPTION:Art of the Times is pleased to share information about "Tobi Kahn: Quest for the Essence" with our readers. \nEvent information supplied via the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County. \nAbout this event\nThe career of New York artist Tobi Kahn (b.1952) can be best defined by seeming opposites: consistency and change. The magic of his practice is that the two coexist\, not only complementing but also enhancing one another. Quest for the Essence\, organized by the Boca Raton Museum of Art\, illustrates how Kahn’s art embraces and refines this duality during a 40-year career. Anchored by two monumental Sky and Water installations – both prompting reflection\, encouraging us to slow down – Kahn’s paintings\, works on paper\, sculptures\, and ritual objects embody his quest for the essence of places\, people\, and things. \nWe recognize the human figure in nature and the landscape in the contours of bodies; places whose photographs always form the basis of paintings are transformed into abstractions; motion is at once arrested and encouraged. The defining quality is resisting realism\, refusing to offer an easy reading of what is depicted. Kahn once said that he loves it when someone comes up with an entirely new interpretation of one of his works: each of us seeing something completely different creating our own journey as we look\, and being enriched by the journey\, are his ultimate goals. \nKahn’s art has often been described in relation to spirituality\, specifically in relation to Judaism\, whose teachings and practices are integral to his life. Yet his vision embraces more than any one religion or belief system. The universality of Kahn’s art lies in its generous search for community and healing. His ZAHRYZ (Tzedek Box) gives shape to a contemporary Jewish ritual\, of writing down and preserving righteous deeds\, yet invites all of us to record and remember each time over the course of the year when we contribute to the world’s healing. It is one of many ritual objects Kahn has adapted or invented to reflect the practice of belief in the modern world\, and more generally\, our search for something holy. \nThe works in the exhibition were deliberately chosen to illustrate what has been most important to Kahn throughout his career: they are all from the artist’s collection. They were the works he would not sell\, that still adorn the walls of his studio in Long Island City and serve as context and inspiration for his journey. The exhibition\, in turn\, invites you to take your own journey in discovering the richness and healing power of Tobi Kahn’s art. \nAdmission information\nMembers: FREEAdults: $16.00Seniors (ages 65+): $12.00Groups: $10.00High School Students (under 18): FREEChildren (under 15): FREE \nPlan your visit\nCity: Boca RatonCounty: Palm Beach CountyVenue: Boca Raton Museum of Art501 Plaza Real\, Boca Raton FL 33432 \nView original event details \nMore arts and culture nearby\nExplore more Boca Raton events or browse the Palm Beach County arts and culture calendar with Art of the Times. \nSource: Cultural Council for Palm Beach County. SUMMARY:Gertrude Abercrombie: The Whole World Is a Mystery
DESCRIPTION:Art of the Times is pleased to share information about Gertrude Abercrombie: The Whole World Is a Mystery with our readers. \nEvent information supplied via the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County. \nAbout this event\nGertrude Abercrombie (American\, 1909 – 1977) produced hundreds of paintings imbued with autobiography that revealed her emotional truth and declared it as real. A critical figure in the mid-20th-century Chicago art and jazz scenes\, Abercrombie made art to give her internal life visual form. She put herself into her painted world\, in self-portraits\, landscapes\, interior scenes\, and still lifes\, through the use of personal symbols and enigmatic female figures. She probed her consciousness\, mined her memories\, drew on her dreams\, and found the peculiar in everyday life\, painting\, as she said\, “simple things that are a little strange.”Abercrombie lived in defiance of her era’s social norms. By blending layers of reality\, her paintings similarly question existence as commonly understood and posit alternate dimensions. Though she had a singular vision\, her reliance on her inner consciousness and use of a fantastical style connected her to broader developments in American modernism. \nThis retrospective exhibition\, the first nationally touring presentation of Abercrombie’s art\, celebrates an artist who has been historically marginalized due to who she was and how she lived and worked. She created a universe that broadens our understanding of American art and identity. Abercrombie observed\, “The whole world is a mystery\,” a statement that asserts expansive possibilities for liberation and self-discovery through art. \nAdmission information\nAdmission: Free for Members; $20\, general public; $17\, seniors (60+); $5\, students (with valid school ID); $10 Art After Dark\, adults and seniors\, $5\, students. SUMMARY:Blazing Light: Photographs by Mimi Plumb
DESCRIPTION:Art of the Times is pleased to share information about Blazing Light: Photographs by Mimi Plumb with our readers. \nEvent information supplied via the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County. \nAbout this event\nA preeminent artist of her generation\, Mimi Plumb (American\, born 1953) has photographed the human-altered landscape for five decades to conjure the enduring issues of our day. Blazing Light\, the artist’s first museum exhibition\, brings together her three most important bodies of work that collectively contemplate the anxieties of contemporary American culture: the combined effects of climate change\, unbridled capitalism\, and ceaseless military conflict. As a teenager in the 1970s\, Plumb began photographing during a time of rapid land development coupled with global political and economic instability. Her early artistic life was defined by a burgeoning awareness of global warming and the looming threats posed by the Cold War. This atmosphere attuned her to the evidence of such forces in the land\, the built environment\, and the ways people carry themselves and relate to one another — concerns that continue to abide in her work. \nWorking in and around San Francisco\, Plumb photographs the grand yet fragile beauty of the American West and the peculiarities of urban life with a distinctively raw visual approach. She skillfully renders California’s notoriously intense sunlight in gritty black-and-white images to amplify the psychological tension and imaginative possibilities that define turbulent times. The White Sky (1972 – 1978) captures the final glimmers of innocence and optimism during the years following World War II\, as cracks in the façade of the American Dream began to widen. Landfall and The Golden City (1984 – 2020) present a society descending into chaos as an ambiguous disaster looms. The Reservoir (2021 – 2025) conveys a stark and desolate world seemingly in the aftermath of a powerful\, undefined apocalypse. Across these bodies of work\, Plumb mournfully charts how persistent unease continues to manifest from the dark realms of imagination into pressing realities. \nAdmission information\nAdmission: Free for Members; $20\, general public; $17\, seniors (60+); $5\, students (with valid school ID); $10 Art After Dark\, adults and seniors\, $5\, students.
