SUMMARY:Blazing Light: Photographs by Mimi Plumb
DESCRIPTION:Art of the Times is pleased to share information about Blazing Light: Photographs by Mimi Plumb with our readers. \nEvent information supplied via the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County. \nAbout this event\nA preeminent artist of her generation\, Mimi Plumb (American\, born 1953) has photographed the human-altered landscape for five decades to conjure the enduring issues of our day. Blazing Light\, the artist’s first museum exhibition\, brings together her three most important bodies of work that collectively contemplate the anxieties of contemporary American culture: the combined effects of climate change\, unbridled capitalism\, and ceaseless military conflict. As a teenager in the 1970s\, Plumb began photographing during a time of rapid land development coupled with global political and economic instability. Her early artistic life was defined by a burgeoning awareness of global warming and the looming threats posed by the Cold War. This atmosphere attuned her to the evidence of such forces in the land\, the built environment\, and the ways people carry themselves and relate to one another — concerns that continue to abide in her work. \nWorking in and around San Francisco\, Plumb photographs the grand yet fragile beauty of the American West and the peculiarities of urban life with a distinctively raw visual approach. She skillfully renders California’s notoriously intense sunlight in gritty black-and-white images to amplify the psychological tension and imaginative possibilities that define turbulent times. The White Sky (1972 – 1978) captures the final glimmers of innocence and optimism during the years following World War II\, as cracks in the façade of the American Dream began to widen. Landfall and The Golden City (1984 – 2020) present a society descending into chaos as an ambiguous disaster looms. The Reservoir (2021 – 2025) conveys a stark and desolate world seemingly in the aftermath of a powerful\, undefined apocalypse. Across these bodies of work\, Plumb mournfully charts how persistent unease continues to manifest from the dark realms of imagination into pressing realities. \nAdmission information\nAdmission: Free for Members; $20\, general public; $17\, seniors (60+); $5\, students (with valid school ID); $10 Art After Dark\, adults and seniors\, $5\, students. SUMMARY:Gertrude Abercrombie: The Whole World Is a Mystery
DESCRIPTION:Art of the Times is pleased to share information about Gertrude Abercrombie: The Whole World Is a Mystery with our readers. \nEvent information supplied via the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County. \nAbout this event\nGertrude Abercrombie (American\, 1909 – 1977) produced hundreds of paintings imbued with autobiography that revealed her emotional truth and declared it as real. A critical figure in the mid-20th-century Chicago art and jazz scenes\, Abercrombie made art to give her internal life visual form. She put herself into her painted world\, in self-portraits\, landscapes\, interior scenes\, and still lifes\, through the use of personal symbols and enigmatic female figures. She probed her consciousness\, mined her memories\, drew on her dreams\, and found the peculiar in everyday life\, painting\, as she said\, “simple things that are a little strange.”Abercrombie lived in defiance of her era’s social norms. By blending layers of reality\, her paintings similarly question existence as commonly understood and posit alternate dimensions. Though she had a singular vision\, her reliance on her inner consciousness and use of a fantastical style connected her to broader developments in American modernism. \nThis retrospective exhibition\, the first nationally touring presentation of Abercrombie’s art\, celebrates an artist who has been historically marginalized due to who she was and how she lived and worked. She created a universe that broadens our understanding of American art and identity. Abercrombie observed\, “The whole world is a mystery\,” a statement that asserts expansive possibilities for liberation and self-discovery through art. \nAdmission information\nAdmission: Free for Members; $20\, general public; $17\, seniors (60+); $5\, students (with valid school ID); $10 Art After Dark\, adults and seniors\, $5\, students. SUMMARY:MICHEL BASSOMPIERRE - Fragile Giants
DESCRIPTION:Art of the Times is pleased to share information about MICHEL BASSOMPIERRE – Fragile Giants with our readers. \nEvent information supplied via the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County. \nAbout this event\nMICHEL BASSOMPIERRE \nFragile Giants \nDecember 2\, 2026 – June 2027 \nWho/What: \nMICHEL BASSOMPIERRE \nFragile Giants \nFrom New York to Florida\, the monumental sculptures of Michel BASSOMPIERRE (1948–2026) continue their American journey. After being exhibited for a year on Park Avenue in New York\, nine major works will be on display at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens. \nSet against this lush natural backdrop\, Michel BASSOMPIERRE’s sculptures take on a special significance. Bears and gorillas—his “Fragile Giants”—seem to emerge from the landscape\, inviting visitors to slow down and see in a new light what the artist called “his animal brother.” This profound connection to all living things runs through his entire body of work. Far from simply reproducing the animal\, Michel BASSOMPIERRE reveals its power\, gentleness\, and fragility. \nA few months after the artist’s passing in April 2026\, this exhibition marks a new milestone in the international recognition of his work. Above all\, it testifies to his work’s ability to continue to live on and engage in dialogue with future generations\, beyond the artist who created it. \nWhere: Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens – 253 Barcelona Road\, West Palm Beach \nWhen: December 2\, 2026 – June 2027 \nAdmission: Normal admission is free for members\, $15 for non-member adults\, $10 for seniors (age 65 and older)\, $7 for students\, and children under five are free. \nContact: Please visit ansg.org or call 561-832-5328 \nPlan your visit\nCity: West Palm BeachCounty: Palm Beach CountyVenue: Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens253 Barcelona Road\, West Palm Beach FL 33401 \nView original event details \nMore arts and culture nearby\nExplore more West Palm Beach events or browse the Palm Beach County arts and culture calendar with Art of the Times. \nSource: Cultural Council for Palm Beach County. SUMMARY:"Tobi Kahn: Quest for the Essence"
DESCRIPTION:Art of the Times is pleased to share information about "Tobi Kahn: Quest for the Essence" with our readers. \nEvent information supplied via the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County. \nAbout this event\nThe career of New York artist Tobi Kahn (b.1952) can be best defined by seeming opposites: consistency and change. The magic of his practice is that the two coexist\, not only complementing but also enhancing one another. Quest for the Essence\, organized by the Boca Raton Museum of Art\, illustrates how Kahn’s art embraces and refines this duality during a 40-year career. Anchored by two monumental Sky and Water installations – both prompting reflection\, encouraging us to slow down – Kahn’s paintings\, works on paper\, sculptures\, and ritual objects embody his quest for the essence of places\, people\, and things. \nWe recognize the human figure in nature and the landscape in the contours of bodies; places whose photographs always form the basis of paintings are transformed into abstractions; motion is at once arrested and encouraged. The defining quality is resisting realism\, refusing to offer an easy reading of what is depicted. Kahn once said that he loves it when someone comes up with an entirely new interpretation of one of his works: each of us seeing something completely different creating our own journey as we look\, and being enriched by the journey\, are his ultimate goals. \nKahn’s art has often been described in relation to spirituality\, specifically in relation to Judaism\, whose teachings and practices are integral to his life. Yet his vision embraces more than any one religion or belief system. The universality of Kahn’s art lies in its generous search for community and healing. His ZAHRYZ (Tzedek Box) gives shape to a contemporary Jewish ritual\, of writing down and preserving righteous deeds\, yet invites all of us to record and remember each time over the course of the year when we contribute to the world’s healing. It is one of many ritual objects Kahn has adapted or invented to reflect the practice of belief in the modern world\, and more generally\, our search for something holy. \nThe works in the exhibition were deliberately chosen to illustrate what has been most important to Kahn throughout his career: they are all from the artist’s collection. They were the works he would not sell\, that still adorn the walls of his studio in Long Island City and serve as context and inspiration for his journey. The exhibition\, in turn\, invites you to take your own journey in discovering the richness and healing power of Tobi Kahn’s art. \nAdmission information\nMembers: FREEAdults: $16.00Seniors (ages 65+): $12.00Groups: $10.00High School Students (under 18): FREEChildren (under 15): FREE \nPlan your visit\nCity: Boca RatonCounty: Palm Beach CountyVenue: Boca Raton Museum of Art501 Plaza Real\, Boca Raton FL 33432 \nView original event details \nMore arts and culture nearby\nExplore more Boca Raton events or browse the Palm Beach County arts and culture calendar with Art of the Times.
\nSource: Cultural Council for Palm Beach County.
DESCRIPTION:Art of the Times is pleased to share information about Visible Fictions: Photography and Artifice with our readers. \nEvent information supplied via the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County. \nAbout this event\nDrawn from the Collection\, Visible Fictions: Photography and Artifice challenges the idea that photography records reality impartially. Through staged scenes\, constructed environments\, performed identities\, and invented narratives\, the featured artists present photography as a medium of invention rather than straightforward documentation. \nWith works by Sophie Calle\, Renée Cox\, Gregory Crewdson\, Thomas Demand\, Tania Franco Klein\, Nikki S. Lee\, Cindy Sherman\, Laurie Simmons\, and others\, the exhibition explores how photographs shape\, rather than simply reflect\, the world around us. \nPlan your visit\nCity: West Palm BeachCounty: Palm Beach CountyVenue: Norton Museum of Art1450 S.
