SUMMARY:Letters Aloud: Thanks but No Thanks
DESCRIPTION:Art of the Times is pleased to share information about Letters Aloud: Thanks but No Thanks with our readers. \nEvent information supplied via the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County. \nAbout this event\nSponsored by The Carl Angus DeSantis Foundation\, Inc. \nLetters Aloud has been delighting audiences with thought-provoking\, relevant\, hopeful\, and humorous stories told through the real voices of real people via their personal correspondence. Whether hilarious or heartfelt\, these letters showcase humanity’s ability to find hope\, meaning\, and laughter\, especially when times are tough. A Letters Aloud evening is the perfect inspiration and antidote for our challenging times. \nPERFORMER BIOS:Letters Aloud was founded in 2013 as a way to connect modern audiences to a rapidly disappearing form of correspondence…the written letter. Each episode focuses on a central theme. Letters are carefully chosen to explore that theme and then handed over to some of Seattle’s most accomplished actors…accompanied by live music and a compelling slide show…to read out loud in a theatrical setting. \nPaul Morgan Stetler – Founder & ProducerPaul is the creator and curator of Letters Aloud and a co-founder (and former Co-Artistic Director) of Seattle’s multi-award winning New Century Theatre Company. A well-known Seattle actor\, Paul has appeared on numerous local stages over the past 20 years\, including ACT Theatre\, Seattle Repertory Theatre\, Village Theatre\, Seattle Children’s Theatre\, Intiman Theatre\, and Empty Space Theatre\, as well as numerous regional theatres across the country. He holds a BA in English Literature at Cal State Northridge and an MFA in Theatre Arts from Penn State University. \nJamie Herlich – ProducerJamie Herlich is a leader in the local performing arts arena\, with a particular focus on organizational and community relationship development. She currently serves as the Director of Individual Gifts at the Seattle Repertory Theatre and serves as an adjunct professor at Seattle University. Previous professional experience includes Director of Advancement and Communications at Edmonds Center for the Arts and is a co-founding member New Century Theatre Company (NCTC) where she served as Managing Director until May 2013. Shereceived her MFA in Arts Leadership from Seattle University in 2010. \nBAND MEMBERS:There are 4 performers to include: a moderator\, two readers and one accordion player. We discussed adding a local reader with community recognition to enhance ticket sales. This person would read a few pre-selected letters. Yvonne Odom will be a guest reader. \nGUEST STAR READER:Yvonne Lee Odom has been an important and influential figure in the Delray Beach community. In her day\, she was most remembered for making history on September 28\, 1961\, as the only black student to walk the halls of Seacrest High School so that the law could be enforced! After 45 years of dedication and commitment to the Palm Beach County School District she retires as a classroom teacher. She can be identified as one of the most influential educational leaders in Palm Beach County. She has a gift of teaching that is rarely identified early in one’s career. In 1967\, when she met her first classroom of students and feel in love with her title\, “teacher”. \nAdmission information\n$44 (Including Fees) \nPlan your visit\nCity: Delray BeachCounty: Palm Beach CountyVenue: Arts Garage94 NE 2nd Ave\, Delray Beach FL 33444 \nView original event details \nMore arts and culture nearby\nExplore more Delray Beach events or browse the Palm Beach County arts and culture calendar with Art of the Times. \nSource: Cultural Council for Palm Beach County. DESCRIPTION:Art of the Times is pleased to share information about Visible Fictions: Photography and Artifice with our readers. \nEvent information supplied via the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County. \nAbout this event\nDrawn from the Collection\, Visible Fictions: Photography and Artifice challenges the idea that photography records reality impartially. SUMMARY:Blazing Light: Photographs by Mimi Plumb
DESCRIPTION:Art of the Times is pleased to share information about Blazing Light: Photographs by Mimi Plumb with our readers. \nEvent information supplied via the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County. \nAbout this event\nA preeminent artist of her generation\, Mimi Plumb (American\, born 1953) has photographed the human-altered landscape for five decades to conjure the enduring issues of our day. Blazing Light\, the artist’s first museum exhibition\, brings together her three most important bodies of work that collectively contemplate the anxieties of contemporary American culture: the combined effects of climate change\, unbridled capitalism\, and ceaseless military conflict. As a teenager in the 1970s\, Plumb began photographing during a time of rapid land development coupled with global political and economic instability. Her early artistic life was defined by a burgeoning awareness of global warming and the looming threats posed by the Cold War. This atmosphere attuned her to the evidence of such forces in the land\, the built environment\, and the ways people carry themselves and relate to one another — concerns that continue to abide in her work. \nWorking in and around San Francisco\, Plumb photographs the grand yet fragile beauty of the American West and the peculiarities of urban life with a distinctively raw visual approach. She skillfully renders California’s notoriously intense sunlight in gritty black-and-white images to amplify the psychological tension and imaginative possibilities that define turbulent times. The White Sky (1972 – 1978) captures the final glimmers of innocence and optimism during the years following World War II\, as cracks in the façade of the American Dream began to widen. Landfall and The Golden City (1984 – 2020) present a society descending into chaos as an ambiguous disaster looms. The Reservoir (2021 – 2025) conveys a stark and desolate world seemingly in the aftermath of a powerful\, undefined apocalypse. Across these bodies of work\, Plumb mournfully charts how persistent unease continues to manifest from the dark realms of imagination into pressing realities. \nAdmission information\nAdmission: Free for Members; $20\, general public; $17\, seniors (60+); $5\, students (with valid school ID); $10 Art After Dark\, adults and seniors\, $5\, students. SUMMARY:Gertrude Abercrombie: The Whole World Is a Mystery
DESCRIPTION:Art of the Times is pleased to share information about Gertrude Abercrombie: The Whole World Is a Mystery with our readers. \nEvent information supplied via the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County. \nAbout this event\nGertrude Abercrombie (American\, 1909 – 1977) produced hundreds of paintings imbued with autobiography that revealed her emotional truth and declared it as real. A critical figure in the mid-20th-century Chicago art and jazz scenes\, Abercrombie made art to give her internal life visual form. She put herself into her painted world\, in self-portraits\, landscapes\, interior scenes\, and still lifes\, through the use of personal symbols and enigmatic female figures. She probed her consciousness\, mined her memories\, drew on her dreams\, and found the peculiar in everyday life\, painting\, as she said\, “simple things that are a little strange.”Abercrombie lived in defiance of her era’s social norms. By blending layers of reality\, her paintings similarly question existence as commonly understood and posit alternate dimensions. Though she had a singular vision\, her reliance on her inner consciousness and use of a fantastical style connected her to broader developments in American modernism. \nThis retrospective exhibition\, the first nationally touring presentation of Abercrombie’s art\, celebrates an artist who has been historically marginalized due to who she was and how she lived and worked. She created a universe that broadens our understanding of American art and identity. Abercrombie observed\, “The whole world is a mystery\,” a statement that asserts expansive possibilities for liberation and self-discovery through art. \nAdmission information\nAdmission: Free for Members; $20\, general public; $17\, seniors (60+); $5\, students (with valid school ID); $10 Art After Dark\, adults and seniors\, $5\, students. SUMMARY:Visible Fictions: Photography and Artifice
Through staged scenes\, constructed environments\, performed identities\, and invented narratives\, the featured artists present photography as a medium of invention rather than straightforward documentation. \nWith works by Sophie Calle\, Renée Cox\, Gregory Crewdson\, Thomas Demand\, Tania Franco Klein\, Nikki S. Lee\, Cindy Sherman\, Laurie Simmons\, and others\, the exhibition explores how photographs shape\, rather than simply reflect\, the world around us. \nPlan your visit\nCity: West Palm BeachCounty: Palm Beach CountyVenue: Norton Museum of Art1450 S.
