The Morgan Library & Museum’s stunning East Room has been named by the editors of Condé Nast Traveler magazine as one of the “The 50 Most Beautiful Places in America.” It is one of only two historic interiors chosen in a group dominated by landscapes and national monuments.

The East Room is by far the largest and grandest of the rooms in the Morgan’s celebrated 1906 McKim building. The structure was built to house the personal library of museum founder Pierpont Morgan. The East Room’s walls, reaching to a height of thirty feet, are lined floor to ceiling with triple tiers of bookcases fashioned of bronze and inlaid Circassian walnut. Two hidden staircases, concealed behind the bookcases at the corners of the room, provide access to the balconies above. The ceiling murals, which depict the Muses and the signs of the Zodiac, are considered among the most beautiful in America.
