Nature, life and the spiritual are part of the meditation contained in PHYSICAL INTUITION, a selection of new mixed-media paintings and ceramic vessel forms by Carole Seborovski at Nohra Haime Gallery.

Multi-layered and tensely balanced in both content and form, this body of work exhibits an intense rapturous physicality. Exactingly crafted using a wide range of materials, the work cross-references multiple cultures, manifests the physical and points towards the spiritual.

The mixed-media paintings embody a sculptural presence and an iconic, fetishistic aura. There is a powerfully lush and sensual physicality created by the materials (Dream, 2016). Often mimicking body parts and referencing nature, paint, sand, twine, beads, glass powder, clay, mirrors, aluminum, gold and silver leaf are incorporated creating intensely rich objects (Geomorphic, 2014). Bold in presence, these seductively tactile materials are precisely combined, multi-layered, and mysteriously engaging.

The ceramic vessels undulate and harken back to forms ranging from the Venus of Willendorf, to the temples of Bali and the caves of Cappadocia. Encrusted with puckered mounds, these archaic, organic shapes incorporate unique combinations of metal leaf and ceramic decals creating a link between cultures and time (Lao Tzu’s Journey, 2011).

These intensely rich works, at times touching upon the humorous, the somber and the surreal, invite the viewer to meditate about the mysteries of nature, life and the spiritual. Seborovski uses perception and contemplation of earthly and metaphysical dimensions to bring us closer to a perpetual completing of her work.

Born in California in 1960, Carole Seborovski, has exhibited in the United States and Europe since 1984. Her work is represented in the permanent collections of major museums such as the Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan, and the Whitney Museum, New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the National Museum of Art, Washington, D.C., among others.
