HAMMER M– USEUM LOOKS AHEAD TO THREE EXHIBITIONS OPENING IN FEBRUARY 2015 in Los Angeles & New York

This February, the Hammer Museum will present three exhibitions, focusing on the unique drawing technique known as “frottage,” the innovative early work of LA-based artist Charles Gaines and the imaginative work of British designer Thomas Heatherwick and his studio. FEBRUARY EXHIBITIONS
Apparitions: Frottages and Rubbings from 1860 to Now
(on view February 7-May 31, 2015)
Featuring over 100 works by 50 artists, Apparitions: Frottages and Rubbings from 1860 to Now explores the technique known as “frottage” which involves rubbing a sheet of paper placed over an object with a marking agent. Debuting at the Hammer, this is the first museum exhibition to explore the historical roots and impact of the method, developed by Max Ernst (German, 1891-1976). Apparitions is co-organized by the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, and The Menil Collection, Houston, and will travel to the Menil in September 2015. Charles Gaines: Gridwork 1974-1989

Charles Gaines: Gridwork 1974-1989 is the first museum survey of the early work of Gaines’s career and includes rare, never-before-seen works, some of which were presumed lost. Charles Gaines, an artist based in Los Angeles, is best known for his photographs, drawings and works on paper that investigate how rules-based procedures construct order and meaning. Organized by The Studio Museum in Harlem, the exhibition is presented at the Hammer in conjunction with Charles Gaines: Librettos: Manuel de Falla/Stokely Carmichael at Art+Practice, a new art and social services non-profit in Leimert Park. Provocations: The Architecture and Design of Heatherwick Studio
(on view February 20-May 24, 2015)
Provocations: The Architecture and Design of Heatherwick Studio is the first exhibition in North America to present the work of British designer Thomas Heatherwick and his London-based studio. Heatherwick Studio is recognized for its inventive approach to design, often combining novel engineering, new materials and innovative technology to create unusual building forms. Organized by the Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas, where it was on view through January 4, the exhibition will travel to the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York in June following the Hammer presentation.
