The idea of self-taught art in the United States was critical to the growth and success of a new nation. Self-Taught Genius features more than one hundred masterpieces from the museum’s renowned collection, including drawings, paintings, artists’ books, quilts, needleworks, pottery, sculpture, and furniture, from the eighteenth century to the present. This groundbreaking exhibition reveals the “genius” of the self-taught to be the power of individuals to define our visual culture.
