Michelangelo Pistoletto is among five winners of the prestigious Praemium Imperiale Award. Founded in 1989, the Praemium Imperiale is a global arts prize awarded annually by the Japan Art Association. The recipients are recognized and awarded for their achievements, for the impact they have had internationally on the arts, and for their role in enriching the global community. Pistoletto will receive the Painting Award in acknowledgement for his role as
a leading figure in the development of the Arte Povera movement in Italy, as well as for the iconic Mirror Paintings he began in 1962. The other 2013 laureates include British sculptor Antony Gormley, British architect David Chipperfield, Spanish tenor Placido Domingo, and American film director Francis Ford Coppola. Each of the recipients receives an honorarium of 15 million Yen, and a diploma and medal will be presented by Prince Hitachi in an awards ceremony held in Tokyo on October 16, 2013.
