Two exhibitions now on view at the American Folk Art Museum in New York includes more than 100 drawings and paintings by self-taught Alabama artist Bill Traylor (c. 1954-1949). Traylor was born into slavery; years after emancipation, near the end of his life, he created iconic works of art, characterized by flat, simply defined shapes and vibrant compositions. In this visual autobiography, Traylor recorded events from his past as well as observations of his later life in Montgomery.
