It has been 40 years since German critic Wieland Schmied and German publishing house The Propyläen Verlag initiated a call for prints in celebration of Picasso’s ninetieth birthday with the intent of honoring the fertile genius of Picasso and his role as a catalyst for many different styles of twentieth century art.

The “Homage to Picasso” portfolio represents a unique event in the history of printmaking. Seventy-one artists were asked to take part. They came from seventeen countries, different generations, and worked in widely varied styles. As a result, a portfolio “90 Plus XXX” containing a total of 70 works was created.

This 40th Anniversary celebration in honor of Picasso will include 22 etchings, silkscreens and lithographs by artists Richard Hamilton, David Hockney, Andy Warhol, Louise Nevelson, Robert Indiana, Joan Miro, Cy Twombly, Corneille, Claes Oldenburg, Roy Lichtenstein, Niki de Saint Phalle, Frank Stella, Jim Dine, Dan Flavin, Frank Stella, Shusaku Arakawa, Jacques Lipchitz, RB Kitaj, Allan D’Arcangelo, Oyvind Fahlstrom, and Nicholas Krushenick.
